Access routes and requirements

Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, regulates the conditions for access to official doctoral programs, establishing the following admission requirements:

To gain access to an official doctoral program, candidates must generally hold an official Spanish Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, and a University Master’s degree. The Master’s degree must include at least 60 ECTS credits with training in the area of Computer Engineering. An adequate level of English is also required for reading and writing international publications.

Additionally, candidates who meet one of the following conditions may also be admitted:

  • Hold an official Spanish university degree, or a degree from another country within the European Higher Education Area, which qualifies for access to a Master’s degree according to Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of October 29, and have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in all official university studies, of which at least 60 must be at the Master’s level.

  • Hold an official Spanish Bachelor’s degree whose duration, in accordance with European Union law, is at least 300 ECTS credits (1).

  • Hold a degree obtained under foreign education systems, without the need for official recognition, provided the university verifies that it accredits a level of training equivalent to the official Spanish Master’s degree and that it qualifies the holder for access to doctoral studies in the country where the degree was issued (2).

  • Hold another Spanish Doctoral degree obtained under previous university regulations.

(1) These graduates must compulsorily complete the supplementary training referred to in Article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, unless the curriculum of the corresponding Bachelor’s degree includes research training credits equivalent in value to the research credits from Master’s studies.

(2) This admission will not imply, in any case, the official recognition of the previous degree held by the applicant, nor its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral studies.
